APPEALS FROM SERVICE
SITTING OF NO. 1 BOARD Further appeals for exemption or release from military service were hoard yesterday by the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board. The chairman (Mr D. C. Cameron) presided, his associate members being Messrs J. C. 11. Somerville ami \V. It. Clarke. Tho following appeals were dismissed, the appellants not to be called up before tho dates mentioned; —S. B. Herbert, a dairy farmer, November 30; Reid and Gray, for W. S. Ritchie, a metal worker’s assist-, ant, December 31; Co-operative Dairy Company of Otago, for F. G. Stevenson, butter room assistant, November 30. The following appeals were adjourned sino die;—R. W. Aitkcn, a dairy farmer; Reid and Gray Ltd., for W. S. Grainger, a wheelraaker ito Homo Guard); Donaghy’s Rope and Twine Company Ltd., for C. M. Ralston, a fitter, E., C. McGrath, a foreman, and W. A. Ball, a machinist. In an appeal by F. J. Lake Ltd., for A. R. Callender, the reservist was granted leave until December 31. overseas' service. . Appeals against overseas service were, dealt wiih as follows:—Mrs V. A. Whalan, for J. L. Whalan, a farmer, dismissed; similar action was taken in an appeal for release from camp by the same’appellant; Jensen Bros., for E. J. Allen, a butcher, dismissed, the reservist not to. be called up before November 30; an application for leave was also dismissed; F. J. Lake Lid., for C. J. Fraser, a canister maker, dismissed (leave granted to May 31, 1943); A. H. Jenkins, a farmer, adjourned to December 31; Otago Harbour Board, for J. Laverty, a civil engineer, adjourned sine die; Mrs I. G. Reid, for W. R. W. Reid, a labourer, dismissed. HOME GUARD APPEALS. Appeals against service with' the Homo Guard were dealt with as followsL. Hessian, a printer's machinist, allowed; A. K. Umbers, a warehouseman, adjourned for six months; G. F. Fraser, a restaurant proprictor, allowed; W. H. Bryde, a farmer, dismissed; J. D. Stancorabe, a farmer, dismissed; W, Burnet, a farmer, dismissed; J. J. Nyhon, for J. A. Winefield, a county clerk, allowed; F. J. Fay, for S. R. Fox, a hotel worker, dismissed; P. J. Fay, a hotelkeeper, released from week-end parades; J. A. Jenkins, for J. T. Sneeston, dismissed. FURTHER APPEALS The No. 2 Board—Messrs J. R. Bartholomew (chairman), J. Price, and H. Hodgson —held a silting yesterday afternoon, when a'number of appeals based on tho grounds of public interest or undue hardship, were heard. The following appeals were dismissed: — Mrs M. I. Ellwood, for H. A. Dllwood, a farm labourer (for release from camp); T. Smith, for A. M. Lysaght, a. bricklayer (for exemption from general service), the reservist not to be called before November 30; the Otago Education Board, for G. D. Bruce, a teacher (against general service), tlTe reservist not to be called before November 30. The following appeals against overseas service were dismissed: —G. H. Wallis, a seed merchant; Mrs E. Plank, for C. J. Plank, a barman; E. G. Bezett, sen., for E. J. Bezett, jnn., a butcher, the reservist not to be called before November 30; Mrs E. Campbell, for W. F. Campbell, a storeman; G. N. Jack, a farmer, not to bo called before January 31. An appeal by Messrs Lovell, Bales Ltd. on behalf of T. G. Tracy, for exemption from overseas service and release from camp, was dismissed. Commenting on the fine family' record (four sons being on service overseas) tho board dismissed an appeal by W. Ducll on behalf of V. F. Duell, service in this case to be limited to New Zealand. In an appeal by the Kaitangata Borough Council for Alfred Pilling, an employee, release was recommended, tho .reservist to serve in the Horae Guard. In an appeal by F. G. Brinsdon for W. P. Brinsdon, a dairyman, tho board recommended release from camp until November 30. R. M. Brown, a bricklayer’s labourer, for whom T. W. King appealed, was granted an extension of time until October 31. An appeal against overseas service, which was lodged by Messrs M. Stevenson Ltd on behalf of R. D. Strang, a motor mechanic, was adjourned until December 31, the reservist to serve in the Home Guard in tho meantime. TO-DAY’S CASES The No. 2 Armed Services Appeal Board sat this morning to hear a number of appeals against service overseas and general service. Mr A. N. Haggilt appeared for the Crown. G. B. Molineux, sheep farmer.—Adjourned for one month. The appeal of J. Skinner, terrazo worker, was adjourned for production of a certificate regarding the health of appellant’s wife. R. F. Whyman, flesher. —Dismissed, not to be called np before December 31. A joint appeal by Mrs B. Geary, on behalf of C. M. Geary, and by the reservist himself was dismissed on condition that service is limited to New Zealand. Mrs A. M. McDonald appealed on behalf of G. R. McDonald, gripman.—Dismissed, service limited to New Zealand. The Department of Industries and Commerce appealed on behalf of T. D. McTaggart, clerk.—The appeal was opposed by J. A. Peat, clerk in the department, “ on a question of principle.” The objector, as a returned soldier In tho present war, expressed the opinion that “ the Army had first claim on McTaggart.”—Decision reserved. Mrs D. Bell appealed on behalf of J. H. Bell, baker.—Adjourned for production of medical certificate concerning appellant. The appeal of Mrs Y. A. Blackwood on behalf of J. A. Blackwood, a sweeper, was dismissed, conditional on service being limited to New Zealand. Mrs E. Varcoe appealed on behalf of E. J. C. Varcoe, tram conductor.—Adjourned till January 31. An appeal by Mrs E. I. Vince on behalf of H. C. Vince, caretaker, was dismissed, service to be limited to New Zealand. •E. G. Gumpatzes, clerk.—Dismissed, subject to appellant’s service being limited to Now Zealand, the matter to bo reviewed in six months’ time. Mrs I. W. MacDonald, on behalf of D. MacDonald.—Dismissed, not to bo called up before November 30. Tho following appeals against general service were made for the reservists named by Cadbury Fry Hudson Lid., and were adjourned sine die, appellants to serve in the Home Guard or E.E.S.; —P. Bridges (chocolate grinder), J. F. Robertson (engineer), A. Young (foreman), J. Collett, (head sloreman), J. Sloddarl (departmental manager), N. Cantwell (factory hand), F. Isaac (factory hand), J. Mawhiuncy (factory hand), P. W. Lunam (truck assistant!, J. F. Fleming (senior clerk), matter to be reviewed in six months, C. Johnston (bakehouse band), and R. C. Green (store assistant). The Director of National Service appealed on behalf of S. T. Hudson, factory manager, on the ground of public interest.— Adjourned to February 28. liayley, Tomkins, Hedges Ltd. appealed against general service on behalf of E. Field, setting machine operator, and T. McElhenny, tannery employee. case tho appeal was adjourned sine die, subject to tho reservist serving in the Home Guard. The appeal ou behalf of McElhenny was dismissed, reservist not to be called up before November 30.
