—Ministerial.— The Minister of Defence (Hon. P.Jones) was engaged on departmental business this morning. .This afternoon ho presided at the ceremonial in connection with the launching of a minesweeper at Port Chalmers. The Minister returns to Wellington by air tomorrow.
Word has been received of the promotion of Squadron-leader L. G. (Peter); Lilly to the rank of wing commander at the age of 24. After gaining his flying license at the Taieri, he proceeded to England early'in 1939. He was posted to the General Reconnaissance Coastal Command in Great Britain, and was serving in Malaya and Java at the time of the evacuation. "Mr James Fletcher, Commissioner of Defence Construction, is at present on a visit to Dunedin. . , Mr J. Roberts and Captain T. Bowling, members of the Waterfront Control Commission returned north by the express last night. Dr C. E. Hercus and Dr W. Newlands left by the express last night tor attend a meeting of the New Zealand Medical Council in Wellington. Mr J. H. Kirkwood, Mr F. Goodwin, Mr W. J. Wiucfield, and Mr J. Mowat left by the express last night to attend a meeting of the New Zealand Carriers 1 - Federation in Wellington. Dr J. B. Dawson and Mr Gordon Bell were passengers by the express last night en route for Wellington, where they will attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand College of Surgeons. Major J. H. Kempthorne, a member of the staff of John McGlashan College, is now instructor at the Staff .College, Middle East, and has been given the temporary rank of lieutenant-colonel. At the thirty-first annual meeting of the Otago branch of the Royal Lifesaving Society last night, Mr H. H* Henderson was elected to the position of president for the twentieth consecutive year. Sir Harry Batterhee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, and Lady Batterhee will arrive in Christchurch on September 23._ Sir Harry Batterhee will leave Christchurch for Dunedin on September 28 and will return to Wellington on October 3. Messrs M. W. Grantham (chairman). S. D. Macpherson, H. H. Gillard, ana \V. J. Mathers (secretary) will leave by the express to-morrow morning to conduct sittings of the Industrial Man Power Committee in South Otago and Southland. They will return on Saturday. At the meeting of the Mosgiel Borough Council last night the mayor (Mr W. P. Hartstonge) referred to the death of Mr Alfred Stevenson (an exborough employee), and Messrs G. M. Campbell, G. A. Murray, and E._ Pickering, who had died on active service overseas. Motions of sympathy were carried. Latest registrations at the Grand Hotel include Mr and Mrs H. Bydder (Wellington), Miss D.
