FIRST MINESWEEPER

LAUNCHED TO-DAY The first of the minesweepers under construction at the Port Chalmers shipyards was formally launched this afternoon by Her Excellency, Lady Newall. Later in the afternoon the GovernorGeneral, Sir Cyril Newall, drove the first rivet in the construction of the next ship to be built. Proceedings were presided over by the Minister of Defence, Hon. F. Jones. Following the consecration service, conducted "by the Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Dean Cruickshank, a prooranmie of speeches was commenced, the sneakers being Mr Jones, the chairman o? the Otago Harbour Board (Mr K. S Thompson), the Mayor of Port Chalmers (Mr H. S. Watson) the Mayor of Dunedin (.Air A. H. Allen), Sir Cyril Newall. and Air James Fletcher, replying on behalf of the contractors.
