ROLLER SKATING

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Skating of an exceptionally high standard was witnessed when the concluding events of the New Zealand roller skating championships were decided on Saturday night at the De Luxe Rink. The most keenly contested events were the men’s and women’s solo championships and the one-mile scratch race for the Jeffries Cup. The men’s solo event, which was won by H. Allchurch, of Christchurch, brought forward only five entries, but in the women’s section there were >ll competitors. Miss Jan Nicholson, also of Christchurch, was the winner of the ladies’ solo event. The one-mile championship race of 24 laps was fought out between eight competitors. One speed skater, after leading for 21 laps, fell, and H. Allohurch shot, through to win narrowly from D. Calder (Dunedin). A number of events were also decided on Saturday afternoon. The following were the results: — Men's Solo Championship.—H. AUchurch (Christchurch) 1, I. R. Bright (Dunedin) 2. W. Travis (Christchurch) 3. Women’s Solo Championship (Sutherland Trophy).—Jan Nicholson (Christa church) 1, Joyce Adams (Christchurch) 2, Noela Woodward (Timaru) 3. Two-step Partners.—H. Allchurch and Joyce Adams (Christchurch) 1, N. Wingham and Gwen Couper (Christchurch) 2, C. Lawrence and Lilian Bradley (Christchurch) 3. One-mile Speed Championship (Jeffries Cup).—H. Allchurch (Christchurch) 1. D. Calder (Dunedin) 2, I. R. Bright (Dunedin) 3. Half-mile Speed Championship.—N. Wingham (Christchurch) 1, A. Mclndoe (Dunedin) 2, C. Gorrie (Christchurch) 3. At the . conclusion of the events on Saturday night the successful competitors were presented with their prizes by Mrs A. L. Power, wife of the president of the New Zealand Roller Skating Association, which had controlled the championships.
