INSTITUTE OF ACCOUNTANTS

ARMED FORCES SCHOLARSHIPS The forty-ninth annual general meeting of the Incorporated Institute of Accountants of New Zealand was held in Wellington recently, the president, Mr T. Auton, of Christchurch, presiding over a good attendance of members. Moving the adoption of the annual report, Mr Auton said that the fact that there had been 29 admissions to membership during the year was very gratifying to the older members of the institute. Many of these applicants were serving in the forces, and most of them had also applied for the armed forces scholarships to be presented by the institute at the end of the war. He was sure that mem-

bers would be very pleased to bear that at the council meeting held earlier in the day it had been decided that it would be possible to grant at least three such scholarships, and he hoped that members would take steps to advise any prospective applicants of the existence of these scholarships. After making the necessary alteration to the rules, the first three life members of the institute were elected. They were Messrs Peter Barr (Dunedin), W. McCulloch (Napier), and G. D. Morpeth (Weliington). All three have been actively associated with the institute since its inception in 1834. . Officers were elected as follows President, Mr T. Auton (Christchurch); vicepresident, Mr J. S. Butler (Hastings); councillors —Messrs D. H. £steen and E. D. Wilkinson (Auckland), Will Appleton, J. L. Arcus, and D. R. Menzies (Wellington), T. Auton and H. Bricknell (Christchurch), H. H. Henderson and H. H. Sykes (Dunedin), J. S. Butler (Hastings), and W. C. Harrington (Palmerston North), treasurer, Mr D. B .Menzies (Wellington) ; secretary, Mr E. C. Morpeth (Wellington) .
