REPERTORY PRODUCTION

Commencing at His Majesty’s Theatre on September 16, the Dunedin Repertory Society will present, for a four-night season, the new Noel Coward play, ‘ Blithe Spirit. Presented at the Piccadilly Theatre, London, only last year, this brilliant play was an instantaneous success, - being hailed by the critics as the best comedy for many years. The author has called his play—an intriguing tale of seances and spirits all unwittingly called back to earth —an “ improbable farce.” The bare story certainly suggests improbability, but Mr Coward has so invested his characters with reality that the play has been accepted with relish. In no way does Mr Coward attempt to dissect the controversial subject of life after death; he merely uses the theme to provide himself with an entirely new and altogether amusing slant on the eternal triangle plot. Few indeed, it is claimed, have failed to be vastly amused by the wit and light-hearted fun which is so abundantly present from the rise of the curtain. The Repertory’s version, which is being presented in aid of the Red Cross Society’s funds, will bo enacted by a strong cast, which includes Mesdames Dora Macpherson, Katrena Speight, John Hamer, W. MacPhail, Miss Sylvia Seelen, and Messrs F. Avent and E. L. Eastgate.
