OBITUARY

MISS ETHEL JACKSON The death occurred yesterday of Miss Ethel Jackson, eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Howard Jackson. Her parents arrived in Dunedin in 1894 from Lawrence. where Mr Jackson had been general manager of the Mine Spur gold mine. Mrs Jackson was a member of Hie wellknown Mair family, early settlers in the North Island. In 1935 she publisher! the “ Annals of a New Zealand Family,' an interesting account of the household of Gilbert Mair. Miss Jackson spent most of her life in Dunedm, where she was for over 37 years a member of the staff of W. E. Reynolds and Co.—a wonderful record of service. She will be remembered chiefly for her work with tho Victoria League, for which she was an indefatigable secretary for over'2o years. Retiring from, that position in 1935, she w r as elected to tho committee, and later became a vicepresident. . No other member of the league knew more of its activities or had its welfare more at heart than Miss Jackson, and she will be sadly missed by the many hundreds of friends of the league. Another of her activities was in connection with the Citizens’ Day Nursery, of which she was secretary for many years. Miss Jackson is survived by two sisters, Mrs A. Chrystal, of Temuka, and Miss Dorothy Jackson, of Dunedin.
