SKATING

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The New Zealand amateur roller skating championships commenced at the Do Luxe Kink yesterday, when a number of the events in the junior section were decided. Competitors from various places in New Zealand are taking part in the championships, but most of the entrants are from Christchurch and Dunedin, Otago skaters were successful in all the events hold yesterday, Miss Betty Barbeau and Master John MoVean giving outstanding performances. The following are the results; — Gliding Pairs.—Miss Betty Barbeau and Master John McVean (Duedin) 1, Miss Dorothy Taylor and Master John Hancock (Dunedin) 2. Waltzing Pairs—Miss Betty Barbeau and Master John McVean (Dunedin) 1, Miss Grace Hack and Master Peter Bamford (Christchurch) 2 Boys’' Solo.—Master John McVean (Dunedin) 1, Master Peter Bamford (Christchurch) 2. Girls’ Solo.—Miss Betty Barbeau (Dunedin) 1, Miss Bonnie Hansen (Christchurch) 2. The remainder of the junior evens were decided this afternoon, and the senior events will ' take, place to-night, and tomorrow afternoon and evening. The championslnp events, which are being staged in conjunction with the usual daily sessions, are conducted under the auspices of the New Zealand Roller Skating Association. The judges were Mrs Porter, of Wellington, Mr R. Wragg, of Christchurch, and Mr J. Walker, of Dunedin.
