SEXTANTS OR CHRONOMETERS
REGISTRATION NECESSARY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. The Acting Prime Minister, Mr Sullivan, to-night drew attention to a notice given in the ‘ Gazette ’ to-day calling for information from all persons who have in their possession or control a chronometer or sextant capable of being used for navigation. Every person concerned must, on or before .September 18, write to the secretary of the Shipbuilding Committee, care of the Marino Department, Wellington, giving his name and address and particulars of the chronometer or sextant. If the instruments are at present being used for purposes of navigation, advice to that effect is to he given. The Minister emphasised that the registration of these instruments is most important, being directly connected with certain naval developments in regard to the equipping of small vessels for defence purposes. These vessels in their local trade have not carried these instruments, which are most difficult to obtain from overseas. The owners of instruments selected for immediate use by the Government will have the option of giving, loaning, or selling them to the Government.
