OBITUARY

DR ALEXANDER DOUGLAS The death occurred at his residence, Reed street, Oatnaru, daring Wednesday night, of Ur Alexander Uouglos, a citizen who played an outstanding part in the 'beautification of the town. He was predeceased by his wife, who was an equally enthusiastic member of the Oamaru Beautifying Society, and their work for Oamaru has been fittingly commemorated by the naming of the stone terraces in Severn street as Douglas Terrace, where there has been placed a bronze tablet, bearing the simple but inspiring inscription: “ They planted trees.” He was a skilful surgeon with a wide practice, but though demands on his services were heavy he still found it possible to give time to educational matters and to the beautification of the town. He was a member of the Waitaki High School Board of Governors, of which he was chairman for a number of years. He was an enthusiastic horticulturist, and spent much of his spare time in his garden. He was a constant exhibitor, especially of roses, at the horticultural shows, and he and Mrs Douglas were ardent supporters of the North Otago Horticultural Society, to which Dr Douglas gave valuable guidance and service as president. To-day Oamaru is noted for its tree-planted streets and beautiful reserves of native trees and shrubs, and this is due in no small measure to Dr Douglas’s advocacy of tree planting and his fine sense of aesthetic values. DR E. GORDON ANDERSON ,(P.A.) WELLINGTON; Sept. 3. The death has occurred of Dr E. Gordon Anderson, surgeon, of Wellington. Dr Anderson, who was born in Wellington, was a registered pharmaceutical chemist prior to studying medicine. After graduating from the Durham University and the London Hospital Medical School, he was first a house surgeon on the staff of the London Hospital and then he filled a similar position on the staff of the Charing Cross Hospital. Later he served for a period as resident medical officer of the Bedford County Hospital. After he returned to Wellington Dr Anderson achieved a high reputation for his surgical shill, one of his patients being the former Prime Minister, Mr M. J. Savage. MR A. S. REID (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 4. The death has occurred of Mr Alexander Sangster Reid, aged 81. He was for 49 years on the literary staff of the Auckland ‘ Star.’ and 38 years its subeditor and Auckland representative of the New Zealand Press Association. He retired from journalism in 1930, and enjoyed remarkably good health until two years ago. He leaves a wife, three sons, and one daughter, all of Auckland.
