OTAGO HUNT RACES

FIELDS AND ANTICIPATIONS The annual Lolaiisatoi- fixture uf Ihe Otago Hunt will be held at Wiugatui tomorrow afternoon, and, thanks to the enterprising increase in stakes, the fields will he much larger than is usual at this meeting. The programme caters for all classes of horses, and the good fields in the two jumping races make it a very attractive one. If the present spell of line weather holds the course will be in excellent order and firm for I his season of (he year. There will only he the inside lolaiisator working, and as 'the intervals between the races has been fixed at 35 minutes the staff will be heavily taxed to handle the money offering and the public will require to make their investments early. Answer to Correspondent.— “ E.N.D.”: The , horses that filled the places behind Padishah in the 1938 Wellington Cup were Catalogue and Tiger Gain. At the October meeting at Trentham the same season 16-17 Shy, 7.5, beat 13-14- Cuddle, 9.9, and 3-2 Cerne Abbas in the Wellington Handicap, Ira 3f.

Winning Flight has not done well since her arrival at Wingatui, and looked very light when exercised this morning. Bally Brit, in charge of P. T. Hogan, looked well when given, light work this morning. It should be remembered that he has run some of Ills best races over Wingatui country. Golden Glow appears to have thrived on the racing he had at Riccartou last month, and should prove the best of the lighter weights in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase tomorrow.

James Thistleton, who trained many good winners over fences from his stable at Riverton, has not applied for a license this season and is mining in the Lakes district. Gay Boa’s good schooling effort this morning will bring him into strong favour for the Hunt Cup Steeplechase to-morrow. He has been unlucky in his recent races, and will only have to do things right to be the hardest to beat. Gold Flight carried 7.6 when she won the Oamaru Cup (l£m) last May, beating Tissue 7.1, The Raker 8.1, and a big field of better-class horses than she is set to meet to-morrow over a mile. This mare sprinted well this morning, and looks a picture of condition.

Strip would be hard to brat in the hurdle race to-morrow if he would jump with a little more confidence. His pace on the flat would enable him to lose the opposition if ho did not drop so much ground at his fences.

None of the visiting horses engaged in the Tally-ho Handicap looks in better condition than Symbol. She has won over a mile, and on the concluding day of the National meeting finished just behind the placed horses in the August Handicap, 7f. There arc several very smart beginners engaged in the five, furlong race to-morrow, including Bali, Winning Flight, Princess Mysotis, Tame Mate, and Light Cavalry, and the drawing of a favourable marble at the barrier by any one of these will make it hard for the opposition. ' His trainer this morning said that the owner- would decide to-night whether Retainer would take his place in the field for the President’s Handicap to-morrow. He was surprised to find on arrival at Wingatui that Retainer was eo much in the boom. H. A. Anderton lias both lughtcalm and Dark Olga engaged in the Tally-ho and Hunters’ Flat Handicap. Nightcalm has been galloping right up to his best form in his track work, and is now to nicely handicapped that ho would only have to repeat track form to be dangerous- in either of his engagements. In the Birthday Handicap, 1m 2jt, last June Doubleack carried 9.0 and was right up with the leaders until nearly halfway down the straight, and finished close up fourth to Cherokee 7.12, Fidclis 8.3, and Maggiove 7.7. With 8.6 m the Tally-ho Handicap to-morrow Doubleack must be given e big chance. _ ~ At the May meeting m Invercargill Gold Sequin came" from some distance back to win the Trial Plate, 6f, and looked as if she would stay well. Gold Sequin is a five-year-old mare 'by. Paper Money from Gold Silk, and was bred by Mr A. T. Burnett, of Halfway Bay. She is one of Southland’s tips for the Hunters’ Flat tomorrow. ~ , When Rockery won tue hurdle race at Ashburton last May he carried 9.0 m very heavy going and registered 2imn 52 4-ssec, Donadea 10.9 being among the “ also starteds.” Rockery followed that success up by winning the brush hurdle race at Oamaru under 9.1, but did not do well on a subsequent trip to the Nortn Island. In to-morrow’s race he will meet Donadea on 211 b worse terms than at Ashburton. . . , , Most' of the visiting horses have now arrived at Wingatui for to-morrow’s meeting and were on the course tins mornin” but trainers were, content to let I hem run along at three-quarter pace, or sprint them down the straight. The only gallop against the walch was one over fui-lon°-s on the No. 1 grass ’track, in which Attorney just beat: Pianiste in 64 l-sseo, with Turaki nearly a dozen lengths away. Phalanx was in receipt of 41b from Heidelberg when he beat him by three lengths in the Otago Hurdles (IJm) last June, but has run indifferently since, and in to-mor-row’s race will meet Heidelberg on 81b better (onus. Phalanx led all the way ill the 01 ago Hurdles, and if he strikes

the front early in to-morrow’s race will/ take a power of catching. He will meet " Donadea on the same terms as in the,' Otago Hurdles. The first totalisator meeting of the Otago Hunt, as at present constituted, was held on September 18, 1915, when the stakes' given totalled £SOO, and £7,880 passed? through the totalisator. Traditor won the-; hurdle race; Wellwood the Dardenellcir Steeplechase, about two miles; Take Downthe five furlong hack race; Royal Medalt the Belgian Steeplechase, about 2m ljf;i Palisade the Kitchener Handicap, one mile; 1 Milo the Hunt Cup Steeplechase, about two miles; Bon the Joffro Handicap, six fur- j longs; and Ormoloid the Hunters’ Flat 1 Handicap, mile and a-quarter. The most interesting happening at Win-i gatui this morning was a schooling bout i over the steeplechase course proper by Gay = Boa, Night Scout, and Master Dingle. They 1 started off in front of the grand stand, and! at the sod wall Master Dingle attempted-, to baulk, then made a bad jump, and| dislodged his rider. Night Scout, appeared , to out-jump Gay Boa over the next two > or three fences, but over the last half-mil** Gay Boa was doing it much the better. I Master Dingle was remounted and sent tot the next fence, at which he baulked, and j was not afterwards persevered with. Hi* I trainer says Master Dingle has a natural. 1 aversion to sod walls.

The class engaged in the Hunt GujjJ Steeplechase to-morrow is not good, anda Valcns’s third in the Grand National andj win in the Hunt Cup Steeplechases at Kic-j carton last month are almost sure to sendg him out favourite. Gay Boa is the bests handicapped horse in the race, and , hart qualified over the Wingatui country. lal the Otago Steeplechase last June he wa*| only just beaten under 9.12 by Princ*i ; Flaneur 9.3, and Ballybrit 11.0, after mak- i ing a bad jump which cost him several! lengths about half a mile from home. luj to-morrow’s race Gay Boa meets Princai Flaneur on 131 b better terms and Ballybritfl on s!b worse terms. lu the Grand National® 'Steeplechase Gay Boa was in the front at the end of two and a-half miles, and o»: the second day fell when in the lead.
