FESTIVAL CONTINUED An excellent programme attracted a good attendance at tho Dunedin Competitions Society’s festival at His Majesty’s Theatre last night. The main feature in a competitive sense was the vocal trio for girls, the performers fieing highly praised by the judge, who stated that in this section the song selected was a three-part one for treble voices. Three boys with broken voices entered, and gave such a very good performance that they were awarded a special prize. Their marks approximate those of the treble group placed first. Then there were exhibition items of vex - y high calibre supplied by Mr J. Leech's Lyric Choir, with Miss Sybil Baker as accompanist, and three delightful ballets by Miss Ethel Todd’s pupils. The chairman for the evening was Mr W, H. Mackenzie, Following are the decisions in the competitive items held yesterday afternoon and evening;— ELOCUTION. Judge; Mr Errol Muir. Prepared Speech, under 16, ‘ Freedom.’ —Miss Audrey Eady (Christchurch), 80 points, 1; Master Neville Madden, 78, 9; Master Grattan O'Sullivan, 77, 3, Six competitors The judge said that all the speeches were excellent. The winner’s was a brilliant effort; her matter was well within her scope, and she made her points very effectively. The young competitor had a great future" as an orator; when older he would acquire the skill of making his points more strongly. Recitation, girls under 12, ‘ The Daffodils.’ —Lorraine Pister, 77 points, 1; Janice McLeod (Christchurch), 76, 2; Phyllis Culling, 75, 3. Highly commended: June Massou and Valerie Sage. Twelve competitors. Character Recital, under 12, own selection.—Miss Janice McLeod (Christchurch), 94 points (maximum 120), 1; Miss Lorna Patrick," 92, 2; Master Neville Madden, 90, 3. Highly commended: Miss Delia Higgins. Thirteen competitors. Recitation, humorous, girls 12 and under 16, own selection.—Miss Mary Hopewell (Christchurch), 86 points, 1; Miss Audrey Eady (Christchurch), 85, 2; Miss Reta Cook, 84, 3. Highly commended: Misses Winnie Sanderson and Alma McAllan. Commended ; Misses Mavis Bode, Peggy Johnson, Elaine Angelo, Glenna Smith, Eunice Morris (Milton), and Patricia Campbell (Milton). Twenty-two competitors. Recitation, humorous, gentlemen, own selection. —Mr Owen Hymen (Gore), 78 points, 1. The only competitor. VOCAL. Judge: Mr H. Temple White. Vocal Trio, for girls or boys, under 18, ‘ The Lass of Richmond Hill.’—Misses Brocket, Noeline Brocket, and Eunice Morris, 86 points, 1; Misses Shirley Salmond, Irene Williams and Noreen Fisher, 85, 2; Misses Isabel Leftwich (Port Chalmers), Hilary Chandler, and Iris Proctor, 84, 3. Very highly commended: Misses Patricia Brady, M Turnbull and Joan Cole. Highly commended: Misses Nancy Perkins, Shirley Phelan, and Kathleen Cole. Commended; Masters John Cornish, Brian Parke, and Raymond Croot, and Misses Yvonne Finnerty, Kay Mutineer, and June Applegate. Vocal Solo, girls, 19 and under 21.
