FIRST CHURCH

- CONGREGATION’S ANNUAL MEETING Reviewing the activities of the past year at the annual meeting of the congregation of First Church last night, the Rev. W. Allen Stevcly spoke of the line way in which the congregation had contributed to the light for freedom and justice. Ten members of the congregation had made the supreme sacrifice, two were missing, 13 were prisoners of war. 60 were now serving overseas, 14 had returned from overseas to serve in New Zealand, and 6ft. were in camps in the Dominion. Owing to the large number of men who were absent on military service, a great deal of responsibility had been placed upon the women of the congregation in maintaining the various church activities. Many of these women workers were also engaged upon national service. In moving the adoption of the annual report, Mr J. 1,. Salmond said that throughout its long life First Church had guided its people aright and its influence was felt throughout the Dominion. Mr P. N. Dick, who seconded the motion, said extreme difficulty was being experienced in maintaining the interest of young people in religious responsibilities owing to the wide diversity of other interests which were now taking up the attention of young men and women. A. number of reports were presented covering various aspects of the church’ work. Tiie session report stated that during the vear 105 members had been added to the roll, this number being made tit) of 57 enrolment; by certificate and 48 by profession ot faith! There were 74 disjunctions. 21 of theso being by death. The roll now stood at 1,129. The Deacons’ Court report stated that the Centennial fund was closed during the year at the very satisfactory amount of £5,646 11s lid, of which £3,155 19s 5d had been paid to the general treasurer, the balance being used to wipe off the church debt. The following deacons were elected, and will be inducted on Sundav, .September 13; Messrs A P. Lrcmner. H. Brodio, E. S. Brown. A. U Cameron, N. Cameron, L. Dunbar, O. Farouharson, H 3, Green. J. V. Hanna, A HalHgan. I. Macfarlane, T. McGregor, A. H. McLeod, H. A. Shackjock, and T. T. Thomson. During the evening items were given by Messrs A. Walmsley, L. Dunbar, and G. McKinlay,
