SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
(From Our Correspondent.) Personal. —There was a big gathering in , the Clutha Football Club’s pavilion on SatI urday afternoon to extend best wishes to Private R. McLeod, who has been on leave. On behalf of the club Mr L. McLean presented him with a tobacco pouch; His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. R. Copland) presented him with a cigarette case on behalf of the Balclutha Soldiers’ Farewell Committee; and Mr D.’ Lattimore, on behalf of the Balclutha Swimming Club, presented him with a hold-all and shaving requisites.—ln the Methodist Church at Balclutha on Sunday afternoon a memorial service was held.as a tribute to the late Miss Clara Grunt, who had been a member and worker over a long period of years. Rev. R. E. Fordyce made feeling reference to the esteem in which the late Miss Grant, was held. Annual Meeting.—The twenty-third annual meeting of the Balclutha Pipe Band was held on Saturday night, when Mr W. B. Duff presided over a very fair attendance. Before commencing business those present stood as a tribute to the memory of the late H.R.H. the Duke of Kent. A similar tribute was accorded the late president, Mr James Xweedie. The annual report showed that 50 per cent, of members wgre on active service. In moving the adoption of the report, the President said the band was weak through members going overseas, and on behalf of the gathering he wished these a safe return. He paid a tribute to Sergeant G. Tosh and Piper L. McKenzie for the work they were doing in keping the band together. The election of officers resulted; President, Mr G. Paterson ; senior vice-president,. Mr A. E. Paterson; junior, Mr J. Gold; treasurer, Mr C. E. O’Hara; secretary, Mr H. Bower; auditor, Mr F. Cooke; committee—Messrs J. Copland, W. Anderson, I. Masters, W. Duff, and R. W. Culbert. The resignation of Pipe-major L. Copland, on active service, was receiyed with regret. An apology was received from Mr T. Gilchrist (Dunedin), and a welcome extended Mr Peter Duff (Dunedin). During the course of a social hour which followed a presentation of a suit case was made to Mr E. B. Lothian, who is shortly removing to Stratford, and who has been Associated with the hand as a player and official over a period of years. Golf.—The first round of the Balclutha men’s club championships was played on Saturday, and resulted: A grade—T. M. Thompson heat J. G. Kelly, J. Clark heat E. Barnett 2 up, R. Guest beat A. Marshall 1 up, W. L. Jolly beat D. M. Frengley 3 and 2. B grade—L. V. Fowler heat L. Egarr by default, O. Robinson heat S. Latta 2 up, G. Ashcroft beat W. R. Scott 1 up, W. D. Sceats heat J. Richards 3 and 2. General. —The members of Balclutha Home Guard paraded to the Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning. The parade through the street was quite an imposing one, the members looking remarkably well in their new uniforms. Football.—Clutha Juniors played a friendly match with a team from Waiwera at Balclutha on Saturday, the result being a win for Clutha, by 8 points to 3 points, after an interesting game. A return match will he played at Waiwera next Saturday, when Clutha Seniors will also go to Clinton. Veterinary Association. —The thirteenth annual meeting of - the Clutha Veterinary Association, held on Friday, was presided over by Mr H. Holgate. The following officebearers were elected: —President, Mr H. C. Holgate; vice-president, Messrs Jasper Clark and T. Bishop; committee—-Messrs A. Anderson, A. Jensen, R. Houliston, J. Thomson (retiring members) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr T. D. Pearson; auditor, Mr J. M. Doggart. The President, in referring to the petrol position, asked members to “ pool ” their jobs where possible, and pointed out that under the part-time service that would be now given this would have to he done. He paid a tribute to the work of the secretary, who had done much under adverse conditions.
