RUSSIAN FRONT. RUGBY. August 30. —The Russian night communique states: On Sunday no important changes occurred on the front. During the week ending August 29 498 German planes wore destroyed. We lost 20G. A supplementary communique reports that fighting for the river crossings on the central front continues. Last evening .Russian troops crossed the river and continued the fight on the western bank. Fierce fighting north-west of Stalingrad is also described. Large tank and infantry forces are participating, but all enemy attacks were repelled. R.A.F. ACTIVE IN EGYPT. RUGBY, August 30.—Medium bamhers and nava) aircraft strafed and bombed the Egyptian battle area, machine - gunning motor transport on Saturday night, according to a Cairo message. Several fires were started, and explosions wore hoard. Last night’a force of medium bombers attacked Tobruk with goad results. REHABILITATION. . “ This training school will become part and parcel of the big educational scheme necessary in the work of rehabilitation,” said Mr M. Mochan, chairman of the •Rehabilitation Board, at a ceremony at which the Hon. P. C. Webb opened a school of carpentry in Auckland. “ The men who arc no«- som ing with the military,” Mr Median continued, “ will be entitled to all the facilities of the 'Dominion for the purpose of equipping them to take their part in civil life. This not only applies to the training of carpenters and other artisans, but equally to men 'who desire to enter the professions. Arrangements will. ,he made for such men to take up, studies right through tho universities. Tilt 1 same facilities will also; he ..prpyided for farmers at agricultural colleges, while for disabled spLdiei;s special vocational centres will bo provided. I hope many thousands;,of returned men will desire work ,in the building trades-.-Houses are urgently required and we must see that the men who build the houses and all other wageworkers are given economic security.”—Auckland Press Association.
