COMMUNITY SING
A record attendance, exceeding 2,000 adults and children, was present at to-day’s community sing, which was held in the Empire Theatre. The collection was also something of a record, for it realised £4l. Children from the different orphanages were present in large numbers, and before the sing started they were entertained with pictures. The singing generally was of a very high order. The proceeds are to be devoted to parcels for prisoners of war. Not every person realises that each week every prisoner receives such a parcel, and that each one costs £l. A special attraction at the sing was the appearance of Miss Ngaire Maxwell, whose songs were much enjoyed; also Messrs Rex Anderson and Trevor Clark, members of the Christchurch Centennial Harmonica Band, whose playing on the piano-accordion and piano were given a great reception. Mr A. Bidgood played several excellent selections on the theatre o rgan. As usual Mr H. P. Desmoulins was leader, with Mr J. F. Himburg assisting, and Mr A. Pettitt at the piano. „ Donations acknowledged were: — Ann, £5; “ Kia Ora” (weekly), £1; .TL.F.,” £1; “ E.,” £1: “ Wellwisher (Roslyn) £5; “Woodwarc” (Balclutha), £1; R.
