POTATO OVERCHARGE

COUNSEL ATTACK REGULATIONS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 28. Four greengrocers were fined by Mr Goulding, S.M., to-day £7 10s each and a fifth £4 on a Price Tribunal prosecution for selling potatoes at a greater price than was permitted. Mr Goulding refused to heed the defence submissions of what he termed “ more or less technical objections.” Counsel had submitted that the cost of potatoes had not been proved nor in what area the potatoes wore bought, different prices being fixed for different localities. Addressing the court on the question of penalty, counsel contended that the regulations were unreasonable and confusing.
