GRAND Sparkling with humour and compelling reamiin as well a* with romance and adventure and peril, ‘Valley of the Sun’ is the chief feature of the new programme at the Grand, which had its first screening- to-day. With Lucille Ball as a frontier heroine and James Craig as a resourceful Army Scout, the picture blends a fastpaced romance with its basic theme of Indian troubles in the old South-west during Lite'turbulent period that followed the Civil War,
Short-sighted army authorities are ignoring the Indians’ justified complaints and protests, thereby storing up menace for the white settlers in the territory. Craig gets into trouble with these same authorities and he has to escape to avoid a mtol sentence. On his (light he meets Miss Ball, who is about to marry a scoundrelly Indian agent. Craig seeks to break up the marriage and avert the massacre he*knows is brewing, and this leads to the many exciting unci spectacular scenes that make up the climax of the film. The supporting film is ‘ Thundering Hoofs,’ featuring Tim Holt, K£XT ATTRACTIONS State (Friday).—’ Tyrone Power and Sonja Henie in ‘ Second Fiddle.’ Empire (Friday).—‘ Pacific Blackout ’ and a musical comedy cartoon, ‘Mr Bug Goes To Town.’ Strand (Friday).—The adventure drama, ‘ Drums of the Congo,’ starring Ona Munson, Stuart Erwin, Peggy Moran, and Hon Terry. Regent (Friday).—Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland in the musical comedy, ‘ Babes on Broadway.’ St. James (Friday).—The Western adventure, ‘ Badlands of Dakota,’ starring * Robert Stack, Ann Rutherford, Frances Farmer, and Brod Crawford.
