REPORTS OF WITHDRAWALS
ATTACK ELSEWHERE THOUGHT PROBABLE
(Hoc. 11 a.m.) CHUNGKING, Aug. 25
The Associated Press reports that, according to the ‘ Takung Pao,’ the Japanese are withdrawing forces from Chekiang and Kiangsi to prepare an attack against Australia, India, or Siberia, “ which would be more advantageous for Japan than wasting troops in impossible enterprises in China.
The ‘ China Times ’ also believes that the Japanese are preparing to attack the Allies. The paper urges the United Nations not to sit still waiting to bo attacked rather than launch now a general offensive against the Japanese.
The Chinese have recaptured Tengpu, in Kiangsi, inflicting great losses on the Japanese in a direct attack on Lishui. A military spokesman said that 50,000 Japanese troops moved from Chekiang to Southern Shansi, and arc believed to be planning to cross the Yellow River. The spokesman declared that the Japanese concentration was insufficient to attempt to cut the Northwest China snpplv route. Tho Central News Agency reports that the Chinese recaptured Cbang,shan, 25 miles north-west of Chuhsien. The Chinese are converging on Chuhsien from the east and north-east.
