UTTER FEARLESSNESS

AWARD TO ALEXANDRA AIRMAN (P.A.) WKLLIXCvTOX, August 25. Tile official citation accompanying the award of the Distinguished Service Order to Acting Squadron-leader Arthur Ashworth, D.F.0., K.A.F., of Alexandra, has been received by Air Headquarters. 'J he citation states: “Throughout numerous sorties, many of thorn in tho Middle Hast, lie has displayed utter fearlessness and magnificent determination to reach and bomb the allotted target in spite of odds. His great skill and efficiency as a captain of aircraft have been an excellent example and stimulus to the entire squadron.” Official advice has been received that Flight-sergeant Ernest Leslie Joyce, R.X.Z.A.F., has been.aivarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. Sergeant Joyce was born at Hamilton and-edu-cated at the Marist Brothers’ School there. He joined the Air Force at the outbreak of war. His mother is Mrs O. Joyce, of Hamilton. The citation accompanying the award states: “ During a long and continuous period of service Sergeant Joyce has performed splendid work. One night ho participated in an attack on an aerodrome at Mattuboam, and, in spite of heavy fire, ho machine-gunned dispersed aircraft on the ground. The attack was carried out from a level of 30 feet. On another night he observed a Junkers 88 flying 400 feet above him. He closed in on the rear of the enemy aircraft, and, countering violent evasive action, shot down the enemy from close range. He has destroyed at least five enemy aircraft, two of them at night. Throughout his operational career he has displayed great gallantry, tenacity, and devotion to duty.”
