—Vice-regal.— At Government House yesterday the Governor-General, Sir. Cyril Newall, received Air Justice Smith and later Mr R. -R. S'lkseua, Indian Government Trade Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand. Advice has .been received by Air and Airs R. L. Pettitt, of 270 Macandrew 1 road, taut their son, I. A. Pettitt, who lias been training at an Air Force school in Canada, lias been granted his wings and a commission. Pilot-officer Pettitt, who received his ' secondary education at the Southland Technical School, is 20 years of age. Before going overseas he was a member of the staff of the Chief Post Office, Dunedin.

Squadron-leader S. L. Gilkison has been appointed to the command of a New Zealand air station.- The son of Air and Airs A. S. Gilkison, Invercargill. Sqadron-leader Gilkison was educated at the AVaihopai School and John AlcGlashan College, Dunedin. He was assistant instructor to the _ Southland Aero Club before his appointment iu 1936 as instructor to the Western Federated Flying Clubs at Wanganui. Subsequently he received an appointment as a pilot for Coolk Strait Airways. As a reserve officer of the R.N.Z.A.F., Squadron-leader Gilkison was called up at the outbreak of war, and lias since served in several departments of the iR.N.Z.A.F.

At the meeting of the Alauagemeut Committee of the Otago Rugby Union last night the president (Air Ira Grant) referred to the death of Sir Janies Allen, who had represented Otago on the field in 1882. Reference was also made to Lance-corporal Gavin Alnrray, who was recently reported killed ‘in action. He represented the province in 1934 and 1938.
