ORDER BEING RESTORED

INDIAN CONDITIONS “ VIRTUALLY NORMAL" POLICE KILLED IN RIOTS LONDON, August 22. A New Delhi message states that conditions arc now virtually normal, except in certain eastern areas, where the authorities have the upper hand, and order is being rapidly restored. A mob attacked a police station in the Ghazipur district and killed seven police. It is feared that at least two police were killed when two other stations in the same district were burned down. A policeman was also killed in the Pilihhit district. Collective fines totalling £7,750 were imposed on Chimur and Asht and villages within a 10-milo radius from them. The Government has prohibited further publication of ‘ Harijan ’ and also its provincial editions because of objectionable articles about civil disobedience.

The Bombay correspondent of the Associated Press of Britain says: “ The latest development in non-violence must remain temporarily unmentioned, but it can be said that the disturbances are spreading into village areas as industrial workers drift home from the cities preaching the gospel of Mr Gandhi. There has been no violence in Bombay lately, but resistance continues. A mob destroyed the Nipani Post and attacked a police station. Two rioters were killed and eight wounded. _A mob at Bailhongal stoned the police, of whom 27 were injured. Four rioters were killed and five wounded. At least five rioters wore killed and 10 injured in the Kaira district.”

The difficulties facing a settlement in India are emphasised anew by the insistence of the Moslem League' that the Pakistan project should be accepted in principle and guaranteed before the league will collaborate with the other parties in the formation of a Government.
