RUMANIAN BATTALION ANNIHILATED

While the Russians seem to be holding the Don west of Stalingrad, some anxiety is felt about the progress .of the latest German thrust towards the city from Kotelnikovo, reported from the Soviet headquarters last night. A supplementary communique stated that in the region of Kletskaya Soviet troops counter-attacked and dislodged the enemy from key positions. Southeast of Kletskaya the Russians continue stubborn fighting against _ forces.
which attempted to cross the Don. One group crossed, but was routed. North-east of Kotelnikovo the Germans started an advance in one sector with large forces and succeeded in driving a wedge into the defences at one place. Heavy fighting is going on. In another place a strong enemy attack was repulsed, and a Rumanian .battalion waa.annihilated.
