DON GROSSINGS BATHES
(Rec. noon.) LONDON, Aug. 23. Heavy fighting continues in South Russia, along the Don, elbow west of Stalingrad. In one sector the Germans have managed to get tanks across the river, and the Russians are battling against the establishment of this bridgehead. Russian troops have been active round Eletskaya, and have improved their positions, lu the south-east fierce fighting is going on for the Don crossings.
Soviet forces claim that in one part a large portion of an Italian infantry and motorised division was destroyed.
Successes are reported in the Leningrad front, but Moscow gives no confirmation to a German claim to have launched an attack against the capital 100 miles south of Moscow.
During the past week the [Russians elaim to have brought down 347 German planes, against the loss of 194 Soviet machines.
