INFERNO OF FIRE. LONDON, August 21.—Ryeburn, ( who is a son of Mr W. R. Ryeburu, of Auckland, dentist, accompanied the first assault of the landing party at Pourville, and was the tenth man ashore in the Dieppe raid. Ho stayed ashore for six and a-half hours in the thick of the heaviest fighting. He was slightly wounded early in the morning by a. mortar shell in the thigh and shoulder, but was at work to-day. “ When the evacuation order was received we had to run 300yds to the beach through a perfect inferno of artillery and mortar fire, and also tremendous air strafing. I still do not know how wo reached the landing craft safely. The scene on the beach reminded me of pictures of Dunkirk. The town was ablaze, hundreds of men were wading to the boats, and the sky was full of planes and shell-bursts. "Wo scrambled on a landing craft, but it sunk beneath us. Wo swam to another, which also sank. Then a flakship picked us up and transferred us to a destroyer.” Ryeburn landed in England in his underwear. Ho was formerly a member of the staff of the ‘ New .Zealand Herald.’ RUGBY. ■ University (Medical) 17. Zingari 8. After 12 minutes’ play—Otago 5, Canterbury 0., PAKURANGA HUNT.
