Answer To ' Correspondent.—“ XYZ ”: Astral Elaine (winner of last season'a Grand National Steeplechase) is by Colonel Cyguus Irom Illume; Anglo-French by S.r Simper, and Colonel French by Colonel Cyguus, both being from Lorette, by Tractor from Moulin Rouge, by Kilbroney from INrectoire, who was the dam of three good cross-country performers in Frenchman, Apache, and Paris. Acceptances for the Otago Hunt meeting close on Thursday at 5 p.m. It is reported that Kindergarten, who was awarded 10.0 in the Melbourne Cup, has been withdrawn from all his Australian spring engagements. According to the New Zealand Racing Conference official ialendar,- Botany Bay is not engaged in the John Grigg Stakes, to be run next month. He-is engaged in tho Dunedin Guineas the following month. For the one-day meeting to be held by the Geraldine Racing Club on September 26, the stakes have been increased £3OO on the amount given on the first day of the two-days’ meeting last season, and tha Geraldine Cup carries £275 (including a trophy valued at £2O). Merry Simon won the Sea view Hurdle* last year under 9.10,. and since then’has started 21 times for two wins, six seconds, and five thirds. He has been alloted top weight, 11.0, in the Sea view Hurdles this season, and will be up against a much stronger field than he beat in last year’s race. • • ■ Two of F. D. Jones’s team, Iceland Spar and the three-year-old Retriever (Man’s Pal —Moorbird) have been fired and will require a lengthy spell. Another of his team. Chestnut Glow’, who is engaged in the John Grigg Stakes and Dunedin Guineas, has been returned to her owner. The retiring office-bearers of the Waikouaiti Racing Club are Mr" A. W. Douglass, president; Dr M. Brown and Mr W, McDougall, vice-presidents; Messrs W. Higgins (hon. treasurer) and Messrs R. M. Templeton and D. Russell (members of tha committee), all of whom offer themselves for re-election. The hard race Kanui Te Pai and Nofco had on the first day of the Grand National Meeting evidently got to the bottom of them, and their displays in the National Hurdles were disappointing, particularly that of Kanui Te Pai. 'ln English his name implies “ plenty good,” but he did not act up to it last Saturday. A number of horses racing at Forbury Park to-day are also engaged in the two light-harness races to be run at the Otago Hunt fixture next month, including Bien Sur, Great Deceiver, Manrico, Sandstone, Sea Fortune, Sea Max, Trevathan, Ben Travis, Bright Lass, Carnarvon, Sir Gaillard. and Dunstan Direct. The annual meeting of members of tho Waikouaiti Racing Club will be held next Thursday at 1.30 p.m., when a satisfactory statement of accounts, showing a profit ou the year’s operations of £204 6s will be presented. Including £BO4 0s 5d cash balances, the club has assets valued at £8,526 9s 6d, and the only liability is £6O 6s Bd, a reserve for taxation. Kauri King, winner of the Grand National Hurdles in 1918, died recently at the age of 31, but he had spent the latter half of lit* life in idleness. Victoria has just lost a: more active veteran in Kind Friend destroyed when a few days short of 30, Rind Friend raced for only nine seasons, winning 49 races, including sprints, middle-distance races, hurdle races, and steeplechases, but for 22 years he visited the Mentone tracks every morning. After his racing days were over he acted as schoolmaster to ; young horses., L. G. Morris has achieved a fine record as a trainer since he started in that profession some 12 years ago, after an eminently successful career as a jockey. Probably no one has done. so well in so short a period, i particularly with regard to tha versatility of his winners. Included in his successes are three Grand National Steeplechases, four Wanganui Steeplechases, and a Wellington Steeplechase, an Auckland Cup, a Railway Handicap, Great Northern Oaks, C.J.C. Stewards Egmont Cup, FeildingCup, Feilding Stakes, Rangitikei Cup, Wellington Cup, Wanganui Cup, and two Thompson Handicaps. , . Colonel Grattan, who was engaged in tho last race at Forbury Park this afternoon, is one of the unlucky pacers during the past three seasons. He has contested three New Zealand Trotting Cups, and was unlucky not to win one, if not two, of them. In the 1939 race he lost his driver when in tha lead, with only half a mile to go. Next year he suffered bad interference about fiva furlongs from home, and after losing several lengths beat all bar Marlene and Dusky Sound. In last year’s race he was badly placed entering the final lap, and then put up a great run to finish fourth off a 4.25 mark in 4min 14 4-ssec. Colonel Grattan, now nine years old, has contested 65 races for 12 wins, 13 seconds, and seven thirds. His best season was at five years old, when he won six races, second in four, and third in two, his stake winnings. amounting to £2,280
