AXIS ATROCITIES

SOLEMN WARNING TO ENEMY RETRIBUTION WILL BE EXACTED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright (Rec. 12.55 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 21. ' A warning to the Axis to halt its atrocities against the citizens of the occupied countries or it would face fearful retribution for its barbaric crimes was issued by Mr Roosevelt in a formal statement at his Press conference to-day. Mr Roosevelt said the American Government had been collecting evidence of such Axis crimes as the execution of hostages, and added that the United Nations were going to win the war, and when victory was achieved it was proposed that each of the United Nations should make appropriate use of information and evidence respecting barbaric crimes in Europe and Asia. “ It seems only fair that they have this warning. The time will come when they will have to stand in courts of law in the very countries they are now oppressing, and answer for their crimes.
