TAIERI RIVER

UNUSUALLY LOW LEVEL M VARIATION IN FIVE MONTHS Since the flood waters receded lasf May, the level of the Taieri River ha* not risen over Ift, This is a remarkable state, of affairs, for usually th« river is subject to marked variations during every month, to say nothing of a five-month interval. It might bo said that this is fortunate for the east bank settlers, with that menacing 70yards gap in tlie bank, but they aro wondering just how long it will be before the weather breaks and the river rises. If the gap had been there this time last year, with all the snow heaped up ia. the back country, the outlook would have been bleak, especially as at thati time there was every prospect of » quick thaw, with attendant flooding on. the Taieri reaches. So far no word has been received of the decisions of the Hon. F. Jones, who inspected the breach with the Minister of Publio Works (the Hon. R. Sempfle), and many of the residents are wondering if it will need another floodin'* of their land before some finality is reached. Meantime, they await the verdict, looking with an anxious eye all the time at’ the deceptive and unusually low stats of the Taieri River. Some are inclined to think that its stability is merely the calm before the storm.
