GOOD RATES FOR COWS AND HEIFERS SHEEP SALE OPENS AT LATE VALUES Quality in the fat cattle yarding of some 287 head at the Burnside sale to-day was on a par with that of last week. Mostly ox was penned, cows and heifers being in short supply—about 30 head altogether. Several pens of extra choice quality bullocks were penned, but the majority comprised medium to light descriptions. Heavy cattle showed a depreciation of 10s to £1 a head on late rates, while medium to light bullocks were 10s to 15s cheaper. Cows and heifers showed an appreciation o£ 10s to 15s a head. Top price to-day was £25 17s 6d. Ewes predominated in the yarding of about 1,650 bead of fat sheep, there being not many wethers forward. Of the former several pens were of excellent quality, but there were a lot of medium-weights, tailing to light sorts. In the wether section some good quality types also appeared, with a good selection of medium grades. The market opened at a shade under late rates. Following are the estimates for beef a hundred lb and the prices a lb for mutton, compared with last week’s rates:—

Store cattle had a medium yarding,made up almost entirely of two, three, and four-year-old steers, well bred, and in fair condition. Competition again was keen, prices remaining very firm.: Four-year-olds brought to £ll 16s; three-year-olds, from £8 11s to £lO ss; two-year-olds, £6 5s to £7 17s fid; and heifers, from £3 los to £6 10s. Boner cows, of which there was a small entry, sold at late rates. Spring lambs forward numbered about 29—a big increase on last week. Thera were, however, some light sorts not mb to marketing standard included, although some excellent animals were entered. Top price was 395. Fat pigs numbered 184 head,, and stores 96. In the fat section heavy baconers were hack 5s a head, although lighter sorts sold well, in company with porkers of the same description. Heavy porkers experienced a slack demand. On the average, rates were much the same as those of last wfek.
