COMPETITIONS SOCIETY A SUCCESSFUL SEASON For the first time in two or three years the Dunedin Competitions Society has emerged on the right side of the lodger, and the festival staged in August has resulted in the income exceeding expenditure by approximately £SO. Complete satisfaction with the position was announced by the president (Mr D. Standage) to-day. 11 Altogether,” he said, “ the festival was a happy and very successful one, and we now feel that wo were fully justified in carrying on. We had hoped to come out •about square, and the fact that we have done better than that is extremely gratifying. “ Onr decision to hold the competitions met with general approval, and all our friends of the past who have given ns donations stood by us again this year. Moreover, the support from competitors and the public was very good indeed. It is also pleasing to be able to say that there was an increase in the number of annual subscribers, so that, taken all round, we feel our efforts have been more than worth while.” One (pleasant aftermath was the number of letters from people who had enjoyed the season, and most of these stated that the evening programmes had been very well arranged. The interest of these persons extended to the point where they offered suggestions for still further improving the programmes, and all the suggestions were being carefully noted, Mr Standage stated. Among the correspondents was a former competitor who had been successful in vocal classes. In declaring his appreciation of the season, and offering some advice, he generously enclosed a handsome donation. Donations were also forthcoming from other members -of the (public, gestures which were very greatly appreciated by the society. Complaints had been received that one of the prize-winning entrants in tho dancing sections was over age, and investigation had proved that these were justified. Consequently, the prizes wore being re-awarded, the second competitor being placed the winner.
