SPRING SUNSHINE
A PLEASANT WEEK-END SUMMER SPORTS SEASON INAUGURATED Bright sunshine over the week-end provided a happy augury to the beginning of the summer sports season. Until late yesterday there was little wind, and the north-east breeze which developed then did not blow for long. In view of the many outdoor events staged by the Queen Carnival Committee on Saturday the sunshine was most welcome, especially as the early morn- „ ing appeared ’ threatening. The line weather, however, was even more welcomed by the cricket and bowling enthusiasts, whose clubs opened officially. Bowling clubs which began their season were lloslyn, Caversham, and Northeast Valley. Tennis was also in full swing, the season having opened earlier. From the weather point of view the incoming season promises favourably, for the spring has been a very' kindly one, not marked by the customary violent changes which do so much to spoil' the early spring months here. All grounds are in first-class condition following an open, storm-free winter; indeed, some are on the dry side. Membership of most junior clubs has been affected as a _ result of the war, and the deficiency is likely to be even more accentuated before the season ends. That is unfortunate, but it is a position which cannot be remedied at present. Yesterday’s pleasantness enticed large numbers to the beaches, where some bathing was indulged in, while thousands paid a visit to Forbury Park, where the Territorial camp was open for inspection. During the night a steady rain set in, and the registration of .22in to 9 a.m. to-day, delighted those who used the week-end to sow seeds or bed out plants. All in all, it was a week-end to satisfy everybody.
