A satisfactory report and balance sheet were presented by the secretary and adopted by the circle. Several members spoke in praise of the excellent management of the group and of the good feeling which existed among members. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year resulted: president Mrs V. Galway; chairwoman, Miss J. Nelson ; vice-chairwoman, Mrs J. Stewart; secretary, Mrs A. H. Lawrenson; committee, Mrs Richdale, the Misses Holland and Pickles. Miss Nelson proposed a vote of thanks to the retiring members of tho committee and thanked her committee for the help and co-operation afforded her at all times, Tho monthly meeting followed, when Miss Nelson presided over a large gathering. An unusual study had been undertaken. ‘ The Humorous Verses of Keg. Arkell.’ Mrs Hervev introduced his verse to members, and a very bright and interesting afternoon was spent reading the lines of this laughing philosopher in cap and bells. Besides being an author, Arkell is a welli known lecturer-broadcaster for 8.8. C. and dramatist. He served in the last war, and was on the staff of the London ‘ Observer.’ He is now the editor of ‘ Men Only.’ He has written revues and musical comedies and also the librettos and lyrics for many of London’s musical comedies. Extracts were' given from ‘Green Fingers,’ ‘ Green Fingers Again,’ ‘ Bridge Without Sighs,’ ‘ Playing the Games,’ ‘ War Rumours,’ ‘ 1066 and All That,’ and several from some of the musical comedies. His gardening verses definitely took pride of place, for there is a laugh in every line. All agreed that the innovation of light verses was quite a happy one.
