St. Clair Club. Starters in the first qualifying round of the club championships wore sot a hard task to play somewhere near their handicap, the course being extended to its fullest and, with a slight wind blowing, competitors found it difficult to reach some of the greens in the required number of strokes to have the regulation two putts. C. B. Wight (scr) had a great round considering tho difficult lay-out, his score of 73 off the stick being really outstanding. J. N. Sams, playing from the 5 mark, went round in 78. In the intermediate grade, F. Sheriff ,(85) played steady golf. During last week-end an open •four-ball event was played. A. i Lawrence and F. Duthie, with the excellent aggregate score of 11 up, ran away from the rest of the field and had a clear-cut victory. In the morning round thev finished 5 up, and in the afternoon 6 up. The runners-up for the aggregate were P. J. Gill and A. Lucas, of Otago, with 4 up. R. J. Griffiths and W. Fraser (St. Clair) played well to win the morning round with a score of 6 up. In the afternoon J. Hardie and R. J. Matthews and A. J. S. M'Ewan and H. Smith, with 3 up. also combined well to lie for first place. Three more members —A. Monteath, G. F. Bolwell, and N. Allen —left this week for camp. Belleknowes Club. Yet another “ hole in one ” was recorded last week-end, when Ray Mahony, of Rugby fame, did the seventh hole in the minimum number of strokes. This season has been remarkable for the number of “ aces,” no fewer than six having been scored. Macandrew Bay Club. , The main event at Macandrew Bay last Saturday was the final of the knock-out ” competition for the Aitoheson Cup. The competitors were J. W. Allan, who won the trophy last year, .and Gerald White, tho 13-year-old junior. The match was a verv even one, and Allan was tho winner at the eighteenth hole after White had unsucessfully putted for a bogey three. . The matches in the “ knock-out ” plate competition have now reached the semifinals, those surviving being A. S. Twose, j. W. Manson, G. While, and F. Waller. In last week’s matches J. W. Manson recovered well after being 2 down with 3 to play to defeat H. Morrow, 1 up. R. S. Twose has improved considerably, and his win registered over A. C. Fenny should mark the beginning of further successes. The medal handicap played in conjunction •with the “ knock-out ” matches resulted in a lie for first place between D. H. Morris and G. White, who returned good cards of net 30’s.
Chisholm Park Club. The introduction of the 18-hole match last Saturday was appreciated by the players A. Laing and \V. Moldrum turned on a fine second nine holes to finish 7 up in the four-ball bogey. !•’. Pink and J. M'Hugb equalled this performance, but were unfortunate to’lose on the count back. In the Roarer’s Mug competition for the nonqualifiers in the championships, the second
round oi' the senior section was completed with the victory of H. Davies over L. Gore. ]i. MTaull was too good for N. Brocklebanlt in the junior second round, which will be completed on Saturday, when S. Riddell and J. Ayers will meet. The semifinals of the club championships will be contested during the week-end. In the seniors D. Sime plays 6. Burns, and G. Mora is opoosed by J. Burns. In the intermediate grade L. Wright plays R. Steele and R. Hiue meets R. Pollock. R. Morns, in the juniors, plays J- Dykes.
