MUSIC STUDENTS’ CLUB

INAUGURAL MEETING i € The inaugural meeting of tho newly- s formed Music Students’ Club, which v was held in Begg’s Salon last Satur- i day evening, proved an unqualified sue- i

cess. Already 70 members have signed on. and enthusiasm was the keynote of the meeting. The club is open to all students studying with M.T.A. teachers who have reached the age of 15 years and are of a certain standard of proficiency. The idea is to make music in each others’ homes, to engage in concerted works, and be given opportunity of performance at the monthly meetings which will he held. The high standard of the works performed on Saturday, the large? attendance, and tho enthusiasm shown seem to suggest that the club will help to fill a longfelt gap in tho musical lives of these gifted young people. Mr G. W. Johnstone, as president of the M.T.A., delivered a very interesting address on the aims and objects of tho club—goodfellowship, music-making in homes, performance before audiences, and to advance tho cause of music in all its branches. The initial programme was greatly enjoyed by all and was as follows:—Trio, ‘ Adante Grave’ and ‘ Allegro ’ (Lachnor), by Ailsa Poulter (violin), Walter Metcalf (viola), and Rai ADNicol (piano) ; piano, ‘ Prelude and Nocturne ’ (Palmgren), by Helen M'Caivj aria, ‘Aria from Fedora’ (Giordano), by Donald Ross (accompanist, June Holmes) ; piano, ‘ Arabesque ’ (Schumann), by Marion Allen; violin, ‘Cavatina’ (Half), by William Laing (accompanist, Irene Adamson) ; songs, ‘ Death and the Maiden ’ (Schubert) and ‘ Oh! Could I but Express in fsong ’ (Malashkin), by Blanche Errington (accompanist, Kathleen Allan) ; piano, ‘ Fantasia Impromptu in 0 Sharp Minor’ (Chopin), by Clare Neale; songs, ‘ The Pipes of Pan ’ (Monckton), I A Dream of. Home’ (L’Arditi), by June Donaldson (accompanist, Mario Hunt) ; piano, ‘ Novelette ’ (Schumann), by William Clarke. During the evening Miss Thelma Thomson was elected honorary secretary and treasurer. Mr C. Roy Spackman moved a vote of thanks to Mr Johnstone for his part in launching the club so successfully.
