SLIGHT RISE OH CATTLE RATES PORKERS DOMINATE FAT PIG SECTION Exceptionally good quality was shown in the entry of about 294 head of fat cattle at the Burnside stock sales today. Bullocks predominated, and included were some pens of extra prime sorts, while the bulk comprised prime medium to medium types. Cow and heifer supplies were shorter than usual, although quality did not differ much. The market opened with values a shade easier than last week, but towards the finish there came a definite firming tendency, and values finished higher by 10s to £1 a head. On the average late rates were maintained. Top price to-day was £25 l7s 6d. Wethers formed the bulk of the average yarding of about 1,500 head of fat sheep. Some choice quality was exhibited, with a few pens of good ewes. With outside competition prices were firm at the outset and rose under keen bidding to Is to Is Gd above late rates for all classes. Wethers brought to 49s 9d and ewes to 47s at the time of going to press. Following are the estimates lor beef a hundred lb and the prices a lb for mutton, compared with last week’s rates :

Extra heavy spring iambs sold well to 375; medium brought from 28s to 30s, and lighter sorts from 24s 6d to 275. There were about a dozen forward. A special lot of two and three-year-old bullocks and heifers from the Lakes district, numbering some 100 head, was included in the largo entry of store cattle. Competition was keen for all classes, and prices remained firm at late rates. Best three-year-olds sold to £ll 10s; ordinary, £9 10s to £lO 7s Cd; two-year-olds, £7 to £8 2s 6d; and heifers, £6 10s to £8 15s. Boner cows, of which there was a small entry, brought late rates. Porikers had a keen demand in the fat pig section, but this was not shared by tho larger baconcrs, which were slow of sale. In the former section, £3 10s to £3 14s was the range of prices, averaging about B]d to 9d lb. Heavy baconers brought from £4 to £4 10s, or about 7d lb, while medium-weights brought from. £3 14s to £4, or about to 8d lb. There were 179 fats and 123 stores.
