ARBITRATION COURT

METAL WORKERS' AWARD An award applicable to engineering, iron and brass founding, boilermaking, and allied industries, the Otago and Southland Metalworkers’ Assistants award, has been issued by the Court or Arbitration, which directs that it shall remain in force until June r, 1941, and in so far as it relates to wages the award shall he deemed to have come into force, on the first pay day after June 7 last. All rates of remuneration are made subject to the general order granting a 5 per cent, increase. The matters settled by the court related to hours for freezing companies and on ship repair work, holidays, classification, and extra payment for marine and ship repair work. In other respects the award embodies the recommendations arrived at by the assessors in Conciliation Council. Included in the numerous clauses are the following provisions:—• Fortv hours shall constitute an ordinary week’s work, of which not more than eight hours may be worked on each day from Monday to clusive, 'and between the hours of 7.f11) a.m. and 5 p.m The hours to be worked by workers employed by freezing companies shall be those fixed by the Ne.w Zealand (except Westland) freezing workers’ award. The hours of work for workers engaged on ship repair work shall be 44 per week, to bo worked from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m each day from Monday to Friday inclusive ami from 8 a.m. to noon bn Saturday. If a worker’is empluved for portion of the week on work other than ship repair work ami for portion of the same week on shiprepair work, his hours of work for that week shall he 40, but Saturday work from S a.m. to noon on ship-repair work will be permitted in such-week provided that the 40 hours is not therein’ exceeded. Any worker having worked for 24 hours, inclusive of intervals for meals, shall not be required to continue without his consent It be does continue he shall be paid double rates for all time on the second (lav. AVlien a worker is required to work overtime in the terms of the award after the ordinary hour of ceasing for the day and where such period of overtime is broken except for meal intervals, after at least four hours’ overtime ho shall not be called upon to resume. work until a period of eight hours has elapsed, unless double rates are paid following such resumption of work.
