ACCLIMATISATION AFFAIRS
SOCIETY’S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held last 1 night, Mr 11. Fountain occupying tho chair. Reports of the Angling, Game, Pheasant, and Game Research Committees were received. 'Fbo latter committee reported that a large number of pheasants had been liberated from the society’s game farm during the month. Tho report stressed a warning to the general public against interfering with these birds in any way. There was a heavy penalty for the shooting of them. Tho Town Clerk wrote thanking the society for the pair of white swans which had been placed in the protected pond at Woodliaugb Gardens.—lt was decided to send a copy of this letter to Mr L. O. Hazlqtt (Salisbury). During the month the society paid bounties on the heads of 102 shags. Accounts totalling £450 2s were passed for payment. , WANTON CRUELTY. The question of cruelty to a duck which, while swimming in the Leith, had bpen stoned and killed by boys, was brought up. It was stated that the society’s ranger was looking into the matter, and the opinion was expressed that his inquiries should be followed up with a prosecution.
