MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of the Harbour Board, held last night, was attended by Messrs J. 18. Waters (in the chair), lion. A. Campbell, Messrs R. S. Thompson, J. Preston, F. E. Tyson, J. W; Munro, M.P., R. Walls, D. Copland, W. R. Clarke, D. F. H. Sharpe, A. Smith, W. Begg, and J. H. Duncan. FINANCE. The bank balance showed a credit of £19,595 6s lid. The receipts for the 11 mouths ended August 31 were shown at £160,570, as compared wdth £187,495 for the same period the previous year. The expenditure was stated as £182,952 for the 1939-40 period, as against £200,229 for 1938-39. WORK AT MUSSEL BAY. The Standing Committee recommended for approval the report submitted by the engineer stating that advice had been received from the Labour Department that the work at Mussel Bay upon which Port Chalmers waterside workers were now employed would be finished about the 20th instant, and advising that work could be found for about 20 men for three to four weeks on levelling and cleaning up the Boiler Point sections, provided that a full wages subsidy was obtained. Recommendation adopted. MAORI CENTENNIAL, The Finance Committee reported having considered a request from the Otakou National Maori Centennial Committee for a donation to its funds, favourable consideration of which had been previously promised. The_ committee recommended that £75 be granted for this financial year and that a further donation, with a minimum of £75, be made''next year. The'recommendation was adopted. APPRECIATION. The Standing Committee reported having received a communication from the marine superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company expressing his appreciation of the attention given during the recent docking of an overseas steamer. RETUR.ftfOF CARGO. The cargo imported and exported for the 11 months ended August 31 was reported as having totalled 402,936 tons, as compared with 441,643 tons for the same period last year. ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES. The harbour master reported the arrivals at Dunedin for the month of August as 36 vessels, aggregating 41,418 tons, and at Port Chalmers 15 vessels aggregating 8,483 tons, a grand total of 51 vessels, 49,901 tons. The departures during the same period had been: From Dunedin, 35 vessels, 45,313 tons; Port Chalmers, 17 vessels, 24,673 tons; total, 52 vessels, 69,986 tons. A recommendation by the Standing Committee for the purchase of a quantity of “ Cellinsulate ” bricks for the tug Dunedin and the dredge Otakou boilers, at an approximate cost of £6O, wms adopted. BOARD - MEETINGS. Mr F. E. Tyson moved: “That all previous resolutions of the board relating to the days and times for holding the ordinary board and Standing Committee meetings be rescinded. , (a) The monthly meetings of the Standing Committee be held on the second last Thursday in each month, (b) The monthly meetings of the Standing Committee be held at 2 p.m. (c) The ordinary meetings of the board be held at the conclusion of the monthly meetings of the Standing Committee. That the day and/or time of any monthly meeting of the Standing Committee or any ordinary meeting of_ the board mav be varied by resolution of the board, or. in case of emergency, by the chairman of the board.”
Following a lengthy discussion, clause 1 was rejected by seven votes to six, consequently the remaining clauses were not proceeded with.
