ANNUAL MEETING

CARPENTERS AND JOINERS —— The annual meeting of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners and Joiners’ Machinists’ Industrial Union of Workers was held in the Crawford Lounge on Monday, the president occupying the chair. The ordinary business of the society was carried out, during which a reply was read from the Minister of Finance to the resolution sent to the Government regarding policy. Owing to its importance this letter was held over until the October meeting. It was also decided that the union forward a canteen order for 10s to all members of the union on service. The declaration of the ballot resulted in the following officers being appointed for the ensuing year:—Bro. J. F. A. Gibbon, president; Bro. A. S. M'Tavish, minute secretary; Bro. K. W. Bennet, secretary-organiser; Bros. A. Cameron, W. G. Baird, J. S. Henderson, J. Kenyon, and W. J. Rainbow, executive members. The Secretary read the balance sheet and gave a brief analysis of the yearly returns, revealing that although there was a decrease in membership owing to the war members had subscribed more than £l. Bro. A. S. M'Tavish, as past president, then presented Bro. Gibbon with a medallion in recognition of his services as president during the year 1939-40. The President made suitable reply and addressed members on various relevant matters. At 10.15 supper was served, during which Mr H. Pybus, accompanied by Mr L. Pearson, sang a song. Delegates were elected to the various bodies to which the union is affiliated, and the meeting closed at 11 p.m. While most of the older members went home, some of the younger ones remained and had a pleasant “ singsong.”
