SEAMING TWINE

RELAXATION OF REGULATIONS Farmers —sworn enemies of red tape —will be particularly pleased at an announcement in the ‘ Gazette ’ which removes at least some of the regulations applied in recent weeks. The one in question applies to the seaming twine which is used for sewing wool bales. Regulations gazetted on July 31 of this year made it necessary for a form to be filled in by the supplier of twine and his customer and forwarded to Wellington and returned before the twine could bo delivered. The form specified the purpose for which the materials were needed, and contained a guarantee to be signed by the applicant that they would not be used for any other purpose. This procedure is now unnecessary. Owners of seaming twine may now part with the possession of it, provided that the consignment goes along with the woolpacks which it is intended to se>v, and also provided that there is not more than one half-pound hank to 12 woolpacks. Owners may also sew their own woolpacks with the twine they possess, provided the same conditions are observed. For the most part, in Dunedin at any rate, supplies of seaming twine for the new season are not yet to hand. The type used comes from Italy and is processed in Ireland. A substitute twine was used here in some quantity last year, but results were not satisfactory in all instances. However, particularly in view of the development of linen flax here, it is probable that New Zealand manufacturers will again rise to the occasion, and that their final product will not be inferior to the importation.
