ROWING

OTAGO ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING OF DELEGATES “ We will have to play a watching game, and see that the, sport does not slide into oblivion before the war is over,” said Mr F. Brough (president) at the annual meeting of the Otago Rowing Association last night in extending a welcome to the 12 delegates from the clubs present. ANNUAL REPORT. Consideration would have to be given to the purchase of a suitable craft for interprovincial eights competition, if funds were available, stated the annual report. The Otago representative boat had been damaged on the Wellington trip, while it had been found that the Lower Harbour boat was in such a condition from the previous season that it could not be made fit for use. The holding of a regatta at Waihola by the Dunedin Club was a possibility this season, as there were funds in hand, but it would be left to the club to decide whether the fixture would be held, said the President in moving the adoption of the report. Regattas generally had been well supported, and the Queenstown Club was to be congratulated on keeping the sport alive there. In his opinion, with a new centre-piece the eight-oar boat could be repaired to last for many years, but it was a matter of expense. Finance was not as satisfactory as the previous year, but, considering the difficulty of raising funds then, it was surprising that any favourable balance (£l6 14s 7d) was shown at all. _ He did not think that any interprovincial eights competition would_ be held this year, mainly for financial reasons. The season probably would be a lean one, with so many enlistments. but with younger recruits to draw upon it was encumbent upon the older members to encourage them. Mr J. F. Mackie, who seconded the motion, thought that the young rowers should be given every consideration. The motion was carried. OFFICE-BEARERS. Officers for the season were elected as follows: —President. Mr F. Brough; past president, Mir T. F. Mackie; vicepresident, Mr J. E. Turnbull; secretary and treasurer. Mr E. Wilson; hon. auditors, Messrs James Brown and Co.; Emergenev Committee ' —■ Messrs F. Brough. E. Wilson. W. J. Wilson, J. E, Turnbull, and T. F. Mackie. It was decided to nominate Mr T. F. Maekie as president of the New Zealand Rowing Association.
