FOR GALLANTRY
I GILT CROSS TQ BOY SCOUT SAVED COMPANION FROM DROWNING [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 25. The gilt cross of the Boy Scouts’ Association for gallantry has been awarded to Ralph Watkin, aged 13, of the Calliope Sea Scouts, Devonport, Auckland, for saving another lad from drowning. Dominion headquarters of the Scout movement, Wellington, has received advice that the Dominion Chief Scout, Lord Galway, has approved the award. On April 7 Watkin went swimming at Devonport Beach with his brother Colin. They swam out to a raft about 50yds from the shore through a choppy sea. Another boy, Rex Cubitt, then started for the raft, but on the way he tired and sank. Ralph dived in and started to bring the other boy ashore by the approved life-saving method. Cubitt struggled and hit out wildly with his fists, but Ralph’s training enabled him to secure the boy and tow him ashore. Both were exhausted and were helped out of the water by a stranger. Cubitt would certainly have drowned had he been alone.
