BRAVERY APPRECIATED
SPITFIRE FUND STARTED (British Official Wireless.) . RUGBY, September 25. (Received September 26, at 11.40 a.in.) The people of tho Kentish market town near which Pilot-officer Millington came down, showed instant appreciation of his gallantry. They have started a fighter fund. They had seen the Hurricane coming down with flames darting from it. No sooner had it landed south of tho town, states an Air Ministry bulletin, than the petrol tanks exploded. The pilot just scrambled to safety with slight head injuries. The same afternoon another fighter pilot—a squadron loader, who had destroyed one, probably two, of the Messcrschmitt 109 planes—landed near tho same town by parachute with an injured foot and soaked with petrol. While Ids wound was being dressed tho police put his parachute on show and began collecr, ing for the town’s Spitfire fund.
