JEWISH NEW YEAR MESSAGE
CHIEF RABBI'S DECLARATION (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 25. (Received September 26, at 10.48 a.m.) Dr Hertz, Chief Rabbi in Britain, in a Jewish New Year message, declares: “ A spirit of ardent faith and unconquerable hope animates the souls of the men and women of this country in the stand against the heathen rage of the Nazi rulers. Britain is fighting for her very existence, and on her triumphant victory over totalitarian barbarism depends the whole cause of human freedom.” The House of Israel was the first victim of Hitler’s “callous godlessness,” and his declared aim was the disappearance of the Jew from Europe. When the idols of the new paganism had passed away British Jewry would have a double duty—“ to assist our crushed and outlawed brethren in the struggle for rehabilitation, and to restore the Jewish religious life wherever it was ruined by the malice of man and, ■L\ie disintegration of war.”
