WOMEN DRIVERS
TRANSPORT GLASS APPROVER TECHNICAL COLLEGE MANAGERS MEET Notification that approval by the Education Board of the evening classed at the King Edward Technical College tor women transport drivers had been received was given the board of managers at the monthly meeting yesterday 1 afternoon. The principal (Mr W. G. Aldridge) pointed out that 12 to 14 pupils wore already receiving instruction. and were making satisfactory progress. Since present circumstances justified the practice, it had been decided to reinstate the presentation of a medal for the best plumbing student in the last year of his apprenticeship, advised the Dunedin Plumbers’ Industrial Union of Employers. Appreciation of the cultural work through musical instruction by Dr T. Vernon Griffiths among pupils of the school was conveyed in a letter from the Caversham League of Mothers. Acknowledgment of a cheque of £241 Is from the school for the patriotic funds was received from the Otago Council. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. Different proposals had been made this year for the conduct of the summer school of painting by Mr G. Tovey (head of the art department), reported the principal (Mr W. G. Aldridge). In order to conserve private stores of petrol, generally to reduce expense, and to avoid setbacks through inclement weather, he had arranged from Monday last a series of daily outings to suitable localities. By beginning the school at that early date, he hoped to secure both good weather and the chance of exhibiting work done at an exhibition later. Roll numbers had kept up surprisingly well in the first half of the year (it was also reported), but over 60 pupils had left between July and the term end. Three weeks of vacation unsettled pupils still more. From 700 on July 1, the roll had dropped below 600 pupils, and was expected to fall sharply throughout this term. This annual experience was the reason why musical performances were given at the end of the second term, and why it was difficult to meet requests for the apnoaranee of the school in additional public performances for patriotic purpqses. The report was adopted.
