SUGGESTED PRESENTS FOR SOLDIERS IN EGYPT LIP SALVE IMPORTANT Useful suggestions for Christmas presents for the New Zealand troops in Egypt are contained in a letter received from a captain with the forces there. Writing from Egypt on September 7, he details a number of articles which he says would be appreciated by the troops in the desert. He mentions that broken lips, caused by sunburn, are relieved by lip salve, and this, in a metal container, is most welcome. Q-tol, if available in a tin, is also in demand. Here is the list of items which the captain suggests as suitable for Christmas presents:—Cake in tins, plum pudding (properly packed), chocolates in a tin, shortbread, razor blades (Valet and Gillette), Q-tol (preferably in a tin), iodine pencil (if available), pipe cleaners, comb, metal boot fasteners or leather laces, pair of scissors, small roll of sticking plaster, sox (not too thick, any colour, as stocking tops are worn over them), tape marked with number and name for sewing on to clothes, bachelor buttons, chewing gum. towel, handkerchiefs, lip salve in container, cigarette lighters, face cloth or sponges, sandals, and old illustrated magazines (such as ‘ hook.’ 1 Fix,’ and ‘Fender’s Digest’).
The list also mentions. New Zealand tobacco and cigarettes, but these should not he included in private parcels without inquiries having been made with respect to duty payable. It has already been notified that, providing no tobacco, cigarettes, or liquor are included, all parcels not exceeding 111 b in weight addressed to individual members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force will ho delivered in Egypt free of Customs duty. TTeavv rates of duty, however, apply to parcels contahiiug tobacco, cigarettes, and liquors sent to Egypt.
