Several members expressed strong disapproval of the continuance of subscribing to the endowment scheme for tho duration of the war, and a motion was passed instructing the delegates to place before the 0.0. A. tho opinions of the club. ALBI9N-Y.M.G.A. Matters affecting the game generally were discussed at the seventy-eighth annual meeting of the Albion Cricket Club, which was held last night, and over which Mr F. N. Binney presided, A majority of 25 members present decided against one-day matches for senior and intermediate grades. They also passed resolutions instructing tho club’s delegates to the Otago Cricket Asociation’s annual meeting to vote in favour of the discontinuance of contributions to the endowment fund for the duration of the war, and that play in grade matches should cease at 6 p.m. The amalgamation of the Y.M.C.A. Cricket Club with the Albion Club, as agreed to at a recent special general niceting, was confirmed, and the club will in future be known as the AlbionY.M.C.A. CHAIRMAN’S REMARKS. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, said that although the season had not been a particularly successful one from a playing point of view, members had enjoyed their cricket, and a satisfactory feature was the winning of the fielding trophy by the senior eleven. The financial position was also quite satisfactory, and the club was grateful to the City Council for having made a reduction in the rent of the ground for next year. Probably the most important decision come to, said the chairman, was that which brought about the amalgamation of the Albion and Y.M.C.A. Clubs. The action of the committee in bringing _ forward the matter bad not been hastily taken, and the decision had been made with a view to improving tho position regarding membership and finance. The association with the Y.M C.A. should ensure a source of supply of young members, and should prove of benefit not only to the club, but to cricket generally. The hon. treasurer (Mr J. H. Allen) having read and explained the balance sheet, the motion was seconded by Mr H. J. Duncan, w’ho pointed out that the amalgamation with the Y.M.C.A. was not the first move of the kind in Albion history, ns many years ago that club and the North Dunedin Club had joined forces. The motion was carried. OFFICE-BEARERS. The following office-bearers were elected :—Patron: Sir James Allen, M. ; president, Mr F. N. Binney; 36 vice-presidents; hon. secretary, Mr L. Eskrick; hon. treasurer, Mr (JJ. J. Darracott; committee—Messrs S. F. Duncan, A. Sinclair, Langford Smith, J. H. Don. Miller, F. Breeze; auditors, Messrs H. J. Duncan and G. A. Bertenshaw; Selection Committee, Messrs Langford Smith and S. F. Duncan. The appointment of the club captain and the deputy club captain was left to the incoming committee. MEMBERS ON ACTIVE SERVICE. It was decided that any member of the club who was absent from New Zealand on active service should be regarded as an honorary member during that absence. LIFE MEMBERS. On the motion of Mr G. A. Bertenshaw, seconded by Mr J. H. Allen, Mr F. N. Binney and Mr J. J. Paul were unanimously elected life members of the club. The mover, seconder, and other speakers referred in eulogistic terms to the faithful services rendered in various capacities by Mr Binney and Mr Paul over periods of 36 years and 32 years respectively. ENDOWMENT FUND. Considerable discussion took place regarding the question of the O.C.A. endowment fund, and Mr W. Ditchfield’a motion that the club’s delegates be instructed to vote against the continuance of subscriptions to the fund by clubs during the period of the war was carried, an amendment that the matter be left to the discretion of the delegates being defeated. During the discussion on this mattei the mover of the motion said that the association had not done so badly: it had a fairly good nest egg, and the contributions conic] be resumed at a later date. Tho President, on the other hand, pointed out that the endowment fund could not bo used for general purposes until it had reached the sum of £3.000. and that the interest only could bo handled. Any credit balance which the association possessed was due to the generosity of a few hundred enthusiasts "who had become ground members, not to the players, whose contribution towards the finances necessary to carry on the game, was not what it should be. Mr W. Divers also remarked that when those loyal supporters of the game
who had so consistently contributed to the funds of the association learned that the players refused to help themselves they would probably, and quite justifiably, cease giving any further support DURATION OF MATCHES. It was decided to instruct the club’s delegates to the O.C.A. annual meeting to support the continuation of two-day matches for the senior and intermediate grades. A motion favouring one-day matches for all grades failed to find a seconder. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr G. A (Bertensbaw, that it be a recommendation to the association that play in all tirade matches cease at 6 p.m. instead of at 6.30 as at present. The opinion was expressed that not only the majority of players, but also all the umpires would appreciate the earlier cessation of play. The official opening day was fixed for October 5
