SYDNEY TUG SUNK m LIFE LIST Frees Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, September 23. One of the best-known and most powerful tugs in Sydney Harbour, the Hero, was sunk this afternoon when it was struck by a big freighter whjch it was assisting to berth. One member of the crew of five, John Downie, was drowned. The remainder, including Captain S. Weldon, were rescued by police launches. The collision occurred close to the harbour bridge while the Hero and another tug were moving into position to take the towlines. The Hero was struck amidships. It turned completely over and sank in a few minutes, stern first. The Hero was owned by the J. Fenwick Proprietary Ltd.
