TWO GRADE MATCHES OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND WIN ONE APIECE Two visiting hockey teams from Southland, a senior and a junior combination, met Otago teams on tho Oval on Saturday, play being maintained under ideal conditions. The senior fixture was won by Otago by 5 goals to o, while the junior game went to the Southlanders by G to 4. The senior Southland team put up a good showing, but lucked the finish shown by the home side. Otago’s forwards revealed somo sparkling flashes o) play, but did not have things all their own way, for the Southlanders crowded around the Otago players when the circle was reached to such effect that they were able to smother attempts at goal. These tactics had the effect of reducing the standard of Otago’s play in the second spell, and the attack was less determined. As play had been at a fast clip throughout the first spell. Southland also weakened in the second half, but insufficiently for Otago to take advantage of this. The centrehalf, White, opened the scoring for Otago, but Davidson equalled for Southland very soon afterwards. Alldred put Otago in the lead again, and as the result of a dash by Alldred and Yule the latter gave Otago another goal.. From a scramble in the goal mouth Rvebnrn increased Otago's score to 4. Hennessy and Speirs, despite good preliminary play, just missed scoring for Southland. At half-time the score was; Otago 4, Southland ]. Tho second spell was less lively. Hennessy opened the scoring for Tho visitors. and almost immediately Rvebnrn obtained bis second goal. There was a fair amount of rather loose play in tho circles, and tho goalies were kept busy, although the actual likely goals saved were few. Near i-he end Serai-
nens netted and gave Southland its third goal. The game ended: Otago ... 5 Southland A Messrs W. Gregg (Southland) and H, Sew Hoy were the umpires. JUNIOR GAME. In the junior game Southland general! - showed better form than Otago, although the latter improved in the second spell. However, the issue was not in doubt, and Southland emerged triumphant, tho final score being: Southland 6 Otago 4 Dr B. Monheimer and Mr H. Pickup umpired this game.
