SOUTH OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS SINGLES TITLES TO W. FOGARTY [Special to the ‘ Stab.’] The South Otago championship and handicap tournament was held in tbo Railway Social Hall on Friday and Saturday nights. 'There were fairly largo entries, including several loading Otago players, and an appreciative audience witnessed some brilliant table tennis. The feature of the tournament was the outstanding displays given by W. J, Fogarty, who decisively defeated M. Friend (Dunedin), the present South Island champion, in both the handicap singles and the open championship. In the final of the open singles event the plav was of a particularly high standard, with W. Fogarty returning M. Friend’s hardest drives with beautifully placed chops and finishing off most of the rallies with devastating backhand flicks. Although defeated in the final, M. Friend played very well m all his games. G. Dowuie (Dunedin) was very unlucky not to win a title, as ho was beaten in the final of both doubles by very narrow margins and in the singles championship he went down to M.
